http://thebeatofsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Eric-Melanowski-interview.mp3 In January of 2000, the New York Mets wanted to buyout Bobby Bonilla’s final year of his contract. Bonilla was owed $5.9 million. Instead of paying Bonilla off, the team excepted the terms Bonilla’s agent offered. The offer was to defer the payment until 2011 and then run for 25 years and would include interest. That brings us to perhaps the greatest contract in sports history as Bonilla gets paid every year until 2035. Buzzfeed’s Erik Malinowski looks at how the deal went down and how Bonilla is not the only player the Mets are still paying well past a decade since they played.
